The use of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for fishing ropes is closely related to its unique physical and chemical properties, with the following advantages:
♦ Ultra-high strength and lightweight
The strength of UHMWPE fiber can be up to 15 times that of steel, while the density is only 0.97-0.98g/cm³ (about the density of water), which is much lower than other high-strength materials. This “high strength – low density” combination makes the fishing rope thinner and lighter with the same strength, less resistance when casting, and able to carry more tension, which is suitable for dealing with the impact of large fish.
♦ Abrasion and corrosion resistance
UHMWPE fiber has a smooth surface, high chemical stability and excellent resistance to freshwater, seawater, UV rays, acid and alkali environments. This makes the fishing rope not easy to wear and aging in the complex waters for a long time, and the service life is significantly extended.
♦ Low ductility and high sensitivity
Compared with traditional nylon line, UHMWPE braided line has almost no ductility, which can quickly transmit the subtle movements of fish bites to the fishing rod and enhance the sensitivity of anglers to fish signals. In addition, the low ductility also reduces energy loss due to stretching, which helps to control fish more efficiently.
♦ Process adaptability
By adjusting the fiber braiding process (e.g. 4-braid, 8-braid) and coating treatment, UHMWPE can be made into fishing lines with different characteristics:
